Space Maintainer Orthodontic Appliances

Fixed Space Maintainers:

Unilateral
Is placed in one quadrant only, maintaining the space of 1 or 2 teeth, and consist of a band and loop.

Bi-lateral
Usually called a Lingual Arch or Nance button for the upper arch. Consist of 2 bands cemented on back teeth on both sides connected a by wire behind the lower incisors or a wire with acrylic button resting on the upper palate for stability.

Distal Shoe
A device which uses a metal piece as to guide the eruption of the 1st permanent molar when the 2nd deciduous molar is lost prematurely.
